THE ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front has lost at least four lawmakers in the country’s parliament after they were expelled from the party, Mabel Chinomona, the deputy speaker, said Tuesday.

Mandy Chimene, Kudzanai Chipanga, Jonathan Moyo and Ignatius Chombo ceased to be Members of Parliament on expulsion from Zanu-PF, Chinomona told lawmakers Tuesday. Patrick Chinamasa, the party’s legal affairs secretary, informed parliament in writing Nov. 27, she added.

Zanu-PF fired its president and first secretary, Robert Mugabe, who resigned Nov. 21 after lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against him for misrule.

Chombo and Chipanga are in police custody following their arrest during a brief period of military rule between Nov. 15 and Nov. 21. Chombo faces corruption and fraud charges, while Chipanga, a Zanu-PF youth leader, faces charges of kidnapping. Both will appear in court Dec. 8.

Zimbabwe must hold parliamentary and presidential elections by August 2018. It wasn’t immediately clear whether by-elections will be held to fill the vacant seats in parliament’s lower house.
