HIGHER education minister Jonathan Moyo has apparently revealed that he is relatively safe outside Zimbabwe with some 50 cabinet colleagues and legislators.

The claim was made on Moyo’s official twitter account Monday afternoon before being promptly taken down.

It is suspected that surrogates often run the account on behalf of the minister.

Moyo and members of the G40 Zanu PF members were thought to be among the “criminals around President Robert Mugabe” the military was hunting down when it announced a takeover of power last Wednesday.

Prof Moyo, an avid user of social media, had not been heard from since with reports suggesting he had sought refuge at Mugabe’s private residence in Harare.

Only public service minister Patrick Zhuwao, another G40 minister, had commented on developments in Harare, telling South African media that Mugabe would rather die than step down.

Zhuwao, a nephew of the President, said he was in South Africa but declined to reveal his exact whereabouts.

In a twitter update Monday, Moyo said he was outside the country with 50 others.

Said the minister; “In these difficult & trying times that have been thrust upon our country, I wish to advise concerned family & friends that I'm relatively fine outside the country as are ministers Kasukuwere, Zhuwao, Hlongwane, Zhanda plus at least 50 others who include MPs & Zanu PF officials!”

The situation in Harare remains unclear, with the military remaining on the streets despite Mugabe claiming in a televised national address Sunday that there had not been any coup in the country.

The 93-year-old did not refer to decisions by his Zanu PF party to remove him as its leader and replace him with former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa.

He also ignored a deadline to resign by Monday noon given by the ruling party which promptly announced that it was beginning impeachment proceedings.
