WASHINGTON: The United States on Tuesday urged all parties in Zimbabwe to resolve their disputes calmly and peacefully after troops took up positions around Harare and the ruling party accused the head of the armed forces of treason.

“The U.S. Embassy in Harare is closely following the developments in Zimbabwe,” a State Department official said.

“We encourage all parties to approach disputes calmly and peacefully while following democratic, transparent, and constitutional processes for resolving differences,” the official said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s ambassador to South Africa dismissed talk of a coup against 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday, saying the government in Harare was “intact” despite the presence of soldiers on the streets of the capital.

“There’s nothing really happening. They are just social media claims,” ambassador Isaac Moyo told Reuters, in the first official government response since rumours of a military coup against Mugabe surfaced in the afternoon.
